The Jamaican way of living
The M Missoni Spring 2015 collection celebrates the ever colorful Jamaican way of living – namely, the sense of freedom, energy and vitality emblematic of this Caribbean country’s rich culture and tropical climate.
For sure, a free & easy spirit marks the predominantly fluid shapes. Top pieces are loose fitting, skirts verge toward a softly swingy style, pants find inspiration in the pure ease of active sports apparel. Meanwhile playful ruffles & ruches add to the allure of both basques and shoulder straps, make for fine edgings on jackets, all without diminishing the basic simplicity of the collection’s cuts, lines and volumes.
Appealingly baggy jumpsuits join blouses and dresses in frequently opting for an open-back look thanks to deep geometric necklines complete with lovely knots & bows or long dangling halter type cord ties.
Jamaica, a.k.a. the Island of Eternal Spring, emboldens the presence of Garden of Eden colors, the fabulous array of hues animating the collection: mango yellow, leaf green, khaki, papaya orange, hibiscus red, burgundy, fuchsia pink, bluebell purple, burnt umber. Black serves very much in a versatile role, while white gains fresh visibility in the horizontal zigzag patterns, in the multi-stitch motifs, in the extraordinary multi-gauge jacquard tie-dye effects and in the unusual crochet style knits. It’s an amazing multiplicity of textures – iconic for the M Missoni world – which true to form makes every collection unique.
Lurex creates absolute magic, as in the chameleon camouflage motifs with flashes of yellow & army green on a gold base. In alternative lurex is softer, quieter, muter of impact, apparently lost in the depth of the endless chromatic tones giving expression to the collection.
The season’s equally colorful accessories feature raffia in a selection of gorgeous brights. Shoes come in all kinds of heights, from espadrilles with 3 or 6 cm flatform sole, to sandals with 12 cm raffia wedge. As for bags, the hottest items here are 1) the velvet shoulder bag with neoprene front flap & tan leather trim, and 2) the orange woven-raffia bucket bag in tribute to legendary reggae king Bob Marley and his famous Jamaican rasta tam.
As Bob would say: “Sun is shining, the weather is sweet now”… So let’s all gear up for an irresistible color invasion!
